British lawmaker Bob Blackman has urged Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure that the upcoming national parliamentary election is held in a free, fair, transparent, and inclusive manner.
In an official statement issued from the House of Commons in London, Harrow East MP Bob Blackman made the call.
In the statement, Blackman said, “Elections are the foundation of democracy and the true reflection of the people’s will.”
Referring to the commitments made by Dr. Muhammad Yunus upon assuming the responsibility of the interim government — to restore the rule of law, justice, and good governance — Blackman noted, “Despite those promises, expected progress in democratic reforms, constitutional values, and governance restoration has not been seen.”
Describing Dr. Yunus as “a highly respected and reputable individual,” Blackman added, “Given his stature and standing, the public’s expectations of him are understandably very high.”
He further stated, “The Yunus administration must ensure that people of all political opinions have the opportunity to contribute to the rebuilding of Bangladesh.”
Specifically mentioning minority communities, Blackman said, “They have faced difficult circumstances since the July uprising. Their safety, protection, and fair participation in the political sphere must be ensured.”
In his statement, Blackman also said, “All well-wishers of Bangladesh must come forward to help restore the country’s political rights and to build a just society free from vengeance and discrimination.”
He added that Bangladesh once struggled to establish the independent identity of its people, culture, and language, and now the country needs necessary support to achieve that goal fully.
