Another 220,000 Tons of Wheat to Be Purchased from the United States

Bangladesh is buying another 220,000 tons of wheat from the United States.

Under the direct (G2G) purchase agreement between the two countries, this amount of wheat will cost Tk 842 crore 6 lakh 33 thousand 100. The cost per ton stands at USD 312.25.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Finance, the decision to purchase this wheat was made at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) on Tuesday.

During the period when the United States imposed additional tariffs on products from various countries, the Donald Trump administration set a 35 percent supplementary duty on Bangladeshi products.

To avoid the additional tariff, the interim government moved to withdraw or reduce tariffs on U.S. products and increase imports from there.

In an effort to address the pressure of U.S. supplementary duties, Bangladesh signed a memorandum of understanding in July to import 700,000 tons of wheat annually from the United States.

As part of this process, the government has imported wheat from the U.S. in three consignments so far.

A total of 178,636 tons of wheat have arrived in the country in these three consignments.

Most recently, on November 16, a ship carrying 60,875 tons of wheat from the United States arrived at the outer anchorage of Mongla Port.

Earlier, on November 3, the second consignment of 60,802 tons and on October 25, the first consignment of 56,959 tons of wheat arrived from the United States.

Several more decisions were made at the Purchase Committee meeting on this day. Among them is the importation of 40,000 tons of granular urea fertilizer in the third lot from the United Arab Emirates.

Five million liters of soybean oil will be purchased through the local open tender (national) process.

The meeting also recommended purchasing 10 million liters of refined rice bran oil under the same procedure.

Additionally, the meeting recommended the import of 40,000 tons of DAP fertilizer from Morocco.

Apart from this, the purchase proposal for constructing the Mirganj Bridge over the Arial Khan River on the Rahmatpur–Babuganj–Muladi–Hijla highway was approved in the meeting.
