Dhaka University issues show-cause notices to 403, including Chhatra League leaders

During the July uprising, the Chhatra League (student wing) campus branch of Bangladesh Awami League saw violent incidents on the campus of University of Dhaka from 15 July to 5 August. The university administration has identified 403 individuals, including leaders and workers of the organisation, in connection with the illegal and violent acts.

In a notification signed by the university’s Proctor, Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, released on Tuesday, it was stated that the committee formed to investigate the incidents on the Dhaka University campus submitted a report identifying 128 students. These students had been temporarily suspended by the Syndicate meeting held on 17 March 2025. Later, for further investigation, a five-member inquiry committee was formed; at its second meeting the involvement of a total of 403 students—including the 128 students initially listed—was confirmed.

The notification further states that the students have been directed to submit a written explanation within seven working days to the Proctor’s Office, showing why they should not be permanently expelled from Dhaka University. Failure to comply will result in unilateral action being taken against them according to university regulations.

Notably, the list includes the names of Siddam Hossain (central President of Chhatra League), Sheikh Wali Asif Inan (General Secretary), and the university’s Chhatra League branch President Mazharul Kabir Shayon and General Secretary Tanvir Hasan Saikat, among others.
