Embassy Urges US Citizens in Bangladesh to Remain Alert
The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security alert for US citizens residing in Bangladesh. The warning was issued on Friday afternoon (19 December) on the embassy’s website and social media platforms.
The alert issued by the embassy stated: “According to media reports, the body of young leader Sharif Osman Hadi is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today, Friday, 19 December, at 6:05 pm. His funeral prayer is expected to be held on Saturday, 20 December, after the Zuhr prayer (approximately 2:00 pm) in front of the National Parliament Building on Manik Mia Avenue. During this time, extremely heavy traffic congestion is expected in the area and throughout Dhaka. US citizens are advised to remain vigilant and to remember that even gatherings intended to be peaceful can sometimes become confrontational and escalate into violence. Therefore, avoid demonstrations and exercise additional caution around any large public gatherings.”
This information was shared in a Facebook post after the Jumma prayer on Friday (19 December).
The post stated that the aircraft carrying Shahid Osman Hadi will land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 6:00 pm. To receive the fearless hero who was the living spirit of our July uprising and a defender of independence and sovereignty, all of us will take orderly positions along both sides of the road from the airport towards Shahbag.
The post further stated that from there, Shahid Osman Hadi will be taken to the Dhaka University Central Mosque for public viewing.
