Amid the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) activities over allegations of corruption, the government has removed Mohammad Ejaz, the Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
In his place, Suraiya Akhtar Jahan, an Additional Secretary of the Local Government Division, has been appointed as the new Administrator of the city.
The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives issued an order in this regard on Monday.
Officials of the ministry said that Ejaz’s tenure would have ended naturally after one day anyway. Instead of extending it, an Additional Secretary has been appointed in his place.
The ministry’s notification stated that Suraiya Akhtar Jahan will perform the duties of Administrator until further instructions are issued.
She will exercise and perform the responsibilities of the “Mayor’s authority” of Dhaka North City Corporation.
Along with her current position, she will perform this new responsibility as an additional charge. For this, she will receive an “additional duty allowance” as per rules.
On 12 February 2025, Mohammad Ejaz, Chairman of the River and Delta Research Centre, was appointed as the Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation.
However, within a short time, allegations began to emerge against him of abuse of power, various irregularities, corruption, and acceptance of bribes.
At one stage, the Anti-Corruption Commission began an investigation into these allegations.
As part of this, Ejaz was summoned to the ACC. As he did not appear, a Dhaka court issued a travel ban against him on 1 February.
In the ACC’s application to the court, it was stated that there are allegations against Mohammad Ejaz regarding the leasing of the Mirpur Gabtoli cattle market under Dhaka North City Corporation, the e-rickshaw project, the share of Borak Tower or Hotel Sheraton, shop allocation at Banani raw market, construction and allocation of shops at the parking area of Khilgaon Taltola Super Market, the city corporation’s van service, allocation of shops on footpaths, and various other matters related to the interests of Dhaka North City Corporation.
