Child Killed in Teknaf by Gunfire from Myanmar

A child has been killed on the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar by gunfire fired from Myanmar across the Teknaf border. The incident occurred at around 10:30 am on Sunday in the Techchhibridge area of Hoikyang Union in Teknaf.

 

The deceased, Afnan alias Putuni (12), was the daughter of Mohammad Jasim of Ward No. 3 of the union. She was a fourth-grade student of Lambabil Haji Mohammad Hossain Government Primary School.

 

Hoikyang Police Outpost In-charge Khokon Kanti Nath confirmed the matter.

 

Following the incident, local people, expressing anger, blocked the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf main road at the Lambabil and Techchhibridge areas. On the other hand, border residents are searching for safe shelter out of fear of shelling from Myanmar.

 

Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam said that gunfire had been going on throughout the night across the Hoikyang border. During this, a local child was killed by a bullet coming from the other side. Local people are protesting. Efforts are underway to keep traffic on the road normal.

 

Hoikyang border resident Mohammad Amin said that gunfire incidents have been occurring across this border continuously for several days. The gunfire started yesterday evening and stopped early Sunday morning. As a result, border residents are spending sleepless nights and living in fear. In addition, today a Bangladeshi child was killed by a bullet fired from Myanmar. This has caused extreme anger among the local people.

 

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion Commander (64 BGB) Lieutenant Colonel Md. Jahirul Islam in Ukhiya said that they have heard reports of gunfire across the Myanmar border. They are keeping track of the situation. At the same time, they are on alert to prevent any new Rohingya infiltration.

 

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Imam ul Hafiz Nadim said that he has heard reports of a child being killed by gunfire coming from Myanmar. In addition, residents living near the Hoikyang border have been advised to stay in safe places due to the gunfire. Efforts are being made to remove the road blockade.
