Armed Forces’ Special Magistracy Powers Extended by Another Three and a Half Months

The interim government has extended the tenure of commissioned officers of the Bangladesh Armed Forces as Special Executive Magistrates for an additional three and a half months. This decision was announced on Tuesday (November 11) through a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration.

According to the new decision, army officers of the rank of Captain and above—and officers of equivalent rank in the Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)—will be able to serve as Special Executive Magistrates from November 12 until February 28, 2026.

Previously, the same order was issued on September 12 for a two-month period.

The notification states that commissioned officers of the armed forces can take necessary measures across the country regarding offences under Sections 64, 65, 83, 84, 86, 95(2), 100, 105, 107, 109, 110, 126, 127, 128, 130, 133, and 142 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1898.

After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year due to student and public protests, an interim government was formed on August 8. To maintain law and order, a few days later, on September 17, officers of the Army, Navy, and Air Force were granted the powers of Special Executive Magistrates. Since then, the government has been gradually extending the tenure of these powers.
