Young Man Killed After Altercation While Trying to Buy Fuel at Filling Station, ‘Beaten by Staff’

A young man was killed after being assaulted while trying to buy fuel in Jhenaidah. The incident occurred at around 8:45 pm on Saturday at a filling station in the Jhenaidah Central Bus Terminal area.

 

The deceased was identified as Nirab Ahmed (22), a resident of the Barobaar area in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah. He was associated with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

 

According to local sources, Nirab went to buy fuel at night on a motorcycle along with two of his friends. However, the employees of the filling station refused to sell him fuel. A short while later, Nirab saw the station workers filling fuel into bottles. Seeing this, he asked why fuel was being filled into bottles and why he had not been given fuel. An argument then broke out between him and the filling station employees. At one point, the workers began beating him with bamboo sticks. His friends later rescued him in a critically injured condition and took him to Jhenaidah General Hospital.

 

Dr. Sabyasachi Pal Suman, an emergency department physician at Jhenaidah General Hospital, said that a patient named Nirab was brought to the hospital in a critical condition. He had swollen injuries on his shoulder and the back of his head. After examination, he was declared dead at 9:05 pm.

 

Additional Superintendent of Police of Jhenaidah Sadar Circle, Mahfuz Hossain, said that Nirab got into an altercation with employees at Taj Filling Station while trying to buy fuel for his motorcycle. At one stage, the employees beat him, leaving him seriously injured. He died shortly after being taken to the hospital. He added that three employees of Taj Filling Station have been taken into custody for questioning.
