There was an opportunity for the Muhammad Yunus–led government, which came to power through a movement, to set an example of transparency and accountability.
There were many expectations that the current Yunus government would establish a new precedent. But unfortunately, that did not happen.
Yet, just two weeks after assuming power, in the first address to the nation on the evening of August 25 last year, Professor Yunus promised that the members of his advisory council would soon disclose their income and asset statements before the public.
“In the present government, we have taken a clear stance against corruption. All our advisers will publish their asset statements as soon as possible. Gradually, this will be made regular and mandatory for all government officials as well,” Chief Adviser Professor Yunus had said in his speech.
After that speech, the government even formulated a separate policy for the publication of the advisers’ income and asset statements. But one year after the formation of the interim government, it is now evident that none of the advisers have disclosed their income or asset details to the public.
Meanwhile, a series of allegations of corruption and abuse of power have been raised against advisers, their personal staff members, and their family members. Although the advisers have denied these allegations.
