At a national convention in Dhaka, Communist Party of Bangladesh’s former president Mujahidul Islam Selim alleged that Dr. Muhammad Yunus committed “fraud” in the name of introducing the July Consensus Charter.
Speaking at the event, organized by the Left Democratic Alliance and Bangladesh JASAD, Selim said the charter excluded the points on which consensus was originally sought and instead introduced new clauses.
According to Selim, the left parties refused to sign the revised document, calling it “fake,” “forged,” and “deceptive.” He added that several additional points had been inserted after discussions, making the charter “doubly fake.” Selim declared that the people of Bengal would not participate in what he termed a “fake yes-no vote.”
He announced that the left parties would now mobilize the public under a “People’s Charter,” which he described as the foundation for continued movements, struggles, and future political programs aimed at establishing a democratic United Front government.
Selim called for the unification of leftist groups into a broad “rainbow coalition,” representing all segments of society who are “oppressed and deprived.” However, he said that this coalition must exclude parties symbolized by the boat, plough, scale, and paddy-sheaf—symbols he said were associated with the “same venom.”
The convention was attended by Emeritus Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, CPB president Sajjad Zahir Chandan, BASAD advisor Khalequzzaman, Bangladesh JASAD president Sharif Nurul Ambia, general secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan, Oikya NAP president S.M.A. Sabur, Revolutionary Communist League general secretary Iqbal Kabir Zahid, and several other senior leaders of the left alliance.
