The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have set up multiple check-posts across the capital since Thursday morning to inspect vehicles and strengthen security measures.
Officials said the move aims to maintain law and order and prevent possible acts of sabotage amid growing political tension in the city.
Law enforcement agencies have intensified security in Dhaka and other parts of the country after a series of arson and crude bomb attacks on Wednesday. The unrest comes ahead of the anticipated announcement of the verdict date in a crimes against humanity case against ousted Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.
The incidents occurred just days after the banned Awami League declared a “Dhaka Lockdown” on social media, calling for protests on Thursday — the same day the International Crimes Tribunal is scheduled to announce the date for delivering its verdict related to the July uprising atrocities.
Starting from 7:00 a.m. Thursday, DMP’s traffic and crime divisions began conducting vehicle checks at various checkpoints, including the entrances to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, in front of BTV Bhaban in Rampura, and in areas such as Notun Bazar and Sabujbagh.
Md Nurus Samad, Senior System Analyst (Traffic) at DMP, said the check-posts were established to ensure public safety and control the law and order situation.
He noted that motorcycles are being checked more thoroughly, as many recent sabotage incidents were allegedly carried out by motorcyclists.
The Hasina-led Awami League government was toppled on August 5, 2024, following a student-led mass uprising.
