Pedestrian Killed After Bearing Pad Falls from Dhaka Metro Rail, Services Suspended

A pedestrian was killed after a bearing pad (shock absorber plate) used to reduce vibration on the Dhaka Metro Rail line fell off near the Farmgate Metro Station area in the capital. Following the incident, metro rail services have been temporarily suspended across the city.

The accident occurred around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday (26 October) in front of the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute, adjacent to the Farmgate Metro Station.

The identity of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately.

Multiple station masters confirmed that metro operations were halted soon after the incident. Passengers waiting at different stations were instructed to exit the platforms.

At 2:06 p.m., the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) issued an official statement on its Facebook page, saying:

“Due to a technical/mechanical issue, metro rail operations have been temporarily suspended. We sincerely apologize to our respected passengers for the inconvenience caused. We request everyone to remain patient and cooperate during this unexpected situation.”

Earlier, on 18 September last year, a similar incident occurred when a bearing pad came loose from the metro line, temporarily suspending train services between Agargaon and Motijheel.

According to DMTCL sources, bearing pads—made of heavy rubber—are installed between the metro rail pillars and the track structure to absorb vibration and reduce mechanical stress.
