Lecturers of the BCS General Education Cadre have launched a movement protesting promotion discrimination. Under a “No Promotion–No Work” policy, they have boycotted classes and are holding sit-in programs at government colleges across the country. As their demands remain unmet, the lecturers announced an indefinite sit-in from today, Wednesday (19 November), at the premises of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE).
Speaking at a sit-in program held Tuesday at Rangpur Carmichael College, Bulbul Ahmed, Senior Lecturer of the Marketing Department and a 32nd BCS cadre officer, said: “Among the state's 26 cadres, promotions in 25 follow regular procedures, but promotions in the education cadre have been stalled for a decade. This discrimination is unacceptable. We are being deliberately deprived, which has created resentment. We want to return to our students, but before that, the state must fulfill our rightful demands.”
From early morning, lecturers gathered at the foot of the Shaheed Minar at Carmichael College, disrupting regular classes. Similar programs were held in government colleges across the entire country, not only in Rangpur.
Abdul Latif, convener of the BCS General Education Lecturer Cadre Council and Lecturer of Islamic Studies from the 33rd batch, said: “Since 24 July, the government has taken no initiative to eliminate this discrimination. We are deeply frustrated. We will not return to classes until our demands are met. If necessary, lecturers from all over the country will gather in Dhaka.”
He further stated that from today, Wednesday, an indefinite sit-in program will be held at the DSHE premises, and the movement will continue until their demands are implemented.
