The High Court has issued a rule asking why a directive should not be given to formulate a policy for determining house rent in all city corporations across the country, including the capital Dhaka. On Tuesday, a High Court bench led by Justice Shikhder Mahmudur Razi passed this order.
The Local Government Secretary, the authorities of Dhaka South and North City Corporations (DSCC and DNCC), along with other concerned respondents, have been asked to reply to the rule within the next four weeks.
Earlier, Azimpur resident Imtiaz Uddin filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking a directive to formulate a policy for house rent determination. Advocate Parvez Hossain appeared for the writ petitioner in the court. Following the hearing, Parvez Hossain said that they sought the immediate implementation of the rent-related law enacted in 1991. He further said that, according to the House Rent Control Act 1991, the city management authority of every area is supposed to determine the house rent from time to time. The decision is made considering the quality of the house, its size, connecting roads, and other facilities. This system is in place in many cities around the world.
In the writ, a directive was sought not only for formulating a policy for house rent determination but also for the speedy implementation of the law enacted in 1991 regarding house rent. Additionally, a directive was sought to collect one month’s advance rent as a security deposit when renting a house.
