BNP Secretary General and Sheaf of Paddy symbol candidate for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has said that Jamaat-e-Islami wants to push Bangladesh backward and turn it into a state like Afghanistan. He said that Jamaat is standing in the way of women’s equal rights and the vision of building a modern Bangladesh.
He made these remarks on Monday afternoon while addressing an election rally at Dholarhat Bazar in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “Jamaat-e-Islami wants to turn the country into Afghanistan. They want to push us backward. But we want to move forward. Our goal is to ensure that men and women live in Bangladesh with equal rights.”
Addressing women, he said that women constitute a large portion of the country’s total population, and therefore ensuring their rights is the responsibility of the state. He claimed that Islam also speaks of granting women their rightful rights, but Jamaat is misleading people on these issues.
He further said, “They are seeking votes by using various superstitions and religious sentiments. They want to gain political advantage by misleading people. We want people to know the truth and move forward on the path of development.”
Referring to reports that Jamaat’s ameer has made objectionable remarks about women, the BNP secretary general said, “If such remarks are made, it is unjust. Women will never accept this.”
At the same time, he alleged that Jamaat opposes women’s employment and wants to restrict women’s freedom to work in sectors such as the garment industry. “How will people survive if they do not work?” he questioned.
