Govt secondary teachers go on strike, annual exams halted

Teachers of government secondary schools are going on a full-day work stoppage from tomorrow, Monday (1 December 2025), with a four-point demand including bringing the entry-level position of Assistant Teacher under the BCS cadre. As part of the work stoppage, they will also suspend the ongoing annual examinations. The annual exams started on 24 November.

This program has been announced under the banner of the Bangladesh Government Secondary Teachers’ Association. A teacher leader of the association said that if the government fulfills their demands, they will hold the remaining exams on the weekly holidays, Friday and Saturday, and will publish the results within December. But if the demands are not met, the work stoppage will continue.

The four demands of the secondary teachers are—
One: To include the post of Assistant Teacher in the BCS (General Education) cadre and publish the gazette of the “Directorate of Secondary Education.”
Two: To expedite the appointment, promotion, and posting of teachers working in school and inspection branches to various vacant positions.
Three: To issue the approval order of the arrears of time scale and selection grade in light of the Supreme Court verdict.
Four: To reintroduce the benefits of advance increased salary with 2 to 3 increments for Assistant Teachers as before 2015 and publish the gazette.

Regarding this, a press release of the Government Secondary Teachers’ Association said that teachers held a sit-in program for the second consecutive day today, Sunday, in front of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education regarding their long-standing four-point demand related to professional dignity and salary-allowances. But as the demands have not been met, they are going on a continuous work stoppage from tomorrow.
