In a move symbolizing a potential reset in South Asian diplomacy, a Pakistani naval vessel, PNS Saif, arrived at Chittagong Port on Sunday for a four-day goodwill visit — the first of its kind in more than five decades.
The visit, facilitated under the framework of defense diplomacy, comes amid signs of improving relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan, two countries that have long shared a complex and often strained history since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.
According to official statements, the Pakistan Navy frigate will remain in Bangladesh until November 12, during which its officers and crew will take part in a range of activities designed to strengthen naval cooperation and people-to-people connections. The program includes courtesy calls on senior Bangladesh Navy officials, joint training sessions, sports exchanges, and cultural events aimed at promoting mutual understanding between the two forces.
The visit also allows for reciprocal naval interaction, as Bangladeshi officers are expected to tour the PNS Saif and participate in briefings on maritime operations, ship navigation, and regional security coordination.
Bangladesh’s Interim Government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has signaled a strategic rebalancing of foreign policy since taking office in 2024, seeking to diversify diplomatic partnerships beyond traditional allies such as India. Renewed engagement with Pakistan — once unthinkable in Dhaka’s political climate — is seen by analysts as part of a broader realignment of Bangladesh’s regional priorities.
In Islamabad, officials have described the visit as a “gesture of friendship and cooperation” intended to foster maritime collaboration, regional peace, and humanitarian coordination in the Bay of Bengal.
Observers note that this visit could mark a turning point in Bangladesh–Pakistan relations, long overshadowed by historical grievances linked to the 1971 Liberation War. Both sides have recently expressed willingness to pursue pragmatic ties focused on trade, defense, and disaster management rather than ideological disputes.
The PNS Saif, a Zulfiquar-class multi-role frigate equipped for anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare, is scheduled to host an open day for Bangladeshi naval cadets and local media before departing on Wednesday.
The visit underscores growing efforts by both nations to move beyond the legacy of the past and engage in constructive dialogue rooted in shared regional interests.
