Using religion to seek votes in elections is concerning: ASK

The use of religion in campaigning for the upcoming national parliamentary election, as well as the tendency to seek votes by exerting direct or indirect pressure on citizens who practice other religions, is also a matter of serious concern. In addition, incidents of clashes, violence, provocative statements, and allegations of irregularities among political parties and candidates in various parts of the country have prompted the Law and Arbitration Center (ASK) to express deep concern and anxiety.

On Thursday (29 January), ASK expressed this concern and anxiety in a press release.

According to the organization, these incidents are calling into question the overall electoral environment and creating fear and insecurity among the general public, which runs contrary to the principles of a free, fair, and impartial election.

The press release states that, according to media reports, individuals and activists from various political ideologies are becoming victims of violence surrounding the election. Yesterday, a local Jamaat leader was killed in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur district, and in the same incident, a BNP leader was seriously injured. In addition, 30 activists and supporters from both sides were injured in the clash. Over the past few days, activists and supporters of various political parties in different parts of the country have been attacked by rival groups.

ASK also reported that an allegation has emerged regarding the forcible removal of burqas or niqabs from women during campaigning, which is extremely undesirable. No citizen should be subjected to such humiliation or pressure in any way for participating in electoral activities. At the same time, such actions are contrary to the constitutionally guaranteed principles of equal dignity of citizens, religious freedom, and freedom of expression.

Furthermore, media sources report attempts to influence voters by offering financial benefits, intimidation during campaigning, the use of indecent and offensive language, and verbal attacks against rival candidates.

ASK believes that elections are a fundamental democratic process, and ensuring every citizen’s right to vote according to their choice in a fear-free environment is a constitutional responsibility of the state. It is the collective responsibility of political parties, candidates, the election-related administration, and law enforcement agencies to ensure an environment where there is no place for violence, irregularities, discrimination, or intimidation.

ASK clearly states that any form of violence, provocation, attempts to influence voters through money, misuse of religion, and indecent behavior in the context of elections are completely unacceptable. For the sake of organizing an acceptable, credible, and participatory election, it is essential to immediately take neutral and effective measures against such incidents. At the same time, ASK calls upon all concerned to conduct electoral activities with mutual respect, restraint, and respect for human rights.
