Awami League leader and former minister Ramesh Chandra Sen has died in prison

Former State Minister for Water Resources and former Member of Parliament of Thakurgaon-1 constituency, Ramesh Chandra Sen, has died after falling ill while in custody at Dinajpur District Jail. On Saturday (7 February) at 9:29 am, the emergency department physician of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital declared Ramesh Chandra Sen dead. He was 83 years old at the time of his death.

 

Earlier, after becoming seriously ill while in custody, he was taken from Dinajpur District Jail to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital at 9:10 am. Upon arrival at the hospital, the emergency department physician declared him dead.

 

Sources at Dinajpur District Jail said that on 16 August 2024, Thakurgaon police arrested him and sent him to jail through a court order. The next day, on 17 August, he was transferred to Dinajpur District Jail. He was incarcerated in three cases, including murder.

 

Confirming the death, Dinajpur District Jail Superintendent Md. Forhad Sarkar said that the body would be handed over to the family after completing the necessary legal procedures.

 

Ramesh Chandra Sen was born on 30 April 1940 in Kashalgaon village of Ruhia Union under Sadar Upazila of Thakurgaon district. His father was Khitindra Mohan Sen and his mother was Balashwari Sen. He studied at Rangpur Carmichael College.

 

Active in politics for a long time, Ramesh Chandra Sen was elected as a Member of Parliament five times. Most recently, in 2024, he was elected as a Member of Parliament with the nomination of the Bangladesh Awami League. He also served as a former Presidium Member of the party.
