A devastating fire incident has occurred at the scrap yard located inside the Matarbari coal-fired power plant in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar. The fire broke out at approximately 8:00 pm on Monday (January 12). Immediately after the incident, panic spread across the area.
According to Fire Service sources, upon receiving news of the fire, a unit from Maheshkhali Fire Service initially reached the spot and began firefighting operations. Considering the severity of the situation, additional units were also dispatched from Chakaria upazila. As per the latest information, a total of four Fire Service units from Maheshkhali and Chakaria are jointly working to control the fire. However, the fire has not yet been fully brought under control.
Senior Station Officer of Cox’s Bazar Fire Service Station, Dolon Acharya, said, “A fire has broken out at the scrap yard of the Matarbari coal-fired power plant. Multiple units were dispatched to the spot immediately after receiving the news. Efforts are underway to bring the fire under control.”
The cause of the fire could not be determined immediately. Fire Service officials stated that there is a risk of the fire spreading rapidly as various types of metal waste and flammable materials are stored in the scrap yard of the power plant.
Maheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Imran Mahmud Dalim confirmed the fire incident and said, “A fire has broken out at the scrap yard inside the power plant. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. Fire Service personnel are working at the site, and I am also heading there.”
So far, no information regarding casualties or the extent of damage has been received. The concerned authorities stated that the amount of damage and the actual cause of the fire will be known after a proper investigation once the fire is fully brought under control.
