A 26-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by the driver and staff of a moving bus after being abducted from Savar. The incident, which began late Wednesday night, led to the rescue of the victim and the detention of three suspects in Tangail on Thursday afternoon.
The victim boarded a 'Savar Paribahan' bus around 11:30 pm on Wednesday to travel to Ashulia. According to police, after two other passengers disembarked, the bus staff forcibly confined her, robbed her of gold ornaments and cash, and snatched her mobile phone. The driver then diverted the bus toward Tangail, where she was repeatedly assaulted throughout the night. The perpetrators allegedly recorded the heinous act on video.
The ordeal ended Thursday afternoon when highway police at the Korotia Underpass on the Dhaka-Tangail highway grew suspicious of the stationary bus. Upon inspection, they rescued the woman and detained the driver, Md Altaf (25), and his assistants, Md Sagar (24) and Md Rabbi (21).
Ruhul Amin, Officer-in-Charge of Tangail Sadar Police Station, confirmed that a case was filed by the victim at 8:00 pm. Regarding the victim's identity, the OC noted, "The victim, a resident of Mirpur, initially claimed to be a student of Government Bangla College but later retracted that statement. We are currently verifying her details."
The incident triggered protests in Dhaka. On Thursday evening, students from Government Bangla College held a procession and sit-in at the Technical Crossing area, demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits. While the protest remained mostly peaceful, some 'Savar Paribahan' buses were reportedly vandalized during the demonstration.
