The United States Ambassador to Bangladesh has expressed concern over the growing influence of China across South Asia, saying Washington is closely monitoring developments in the region.
Speaking at a press briefing in Dhaka, the envoy said the United States will continue to engage with Bangladesh to clearly outline the strategic risks associated with deepening reliance on China. He noted that this engagement would continue regardless of whether Bangladesh is governed by an interim administration or an elected government.
The ambassador emphasized that the United States seeks a mutually beneficial partnership with Bangladesh and has multiple avenues to support the country, particularly in the area of defence and security. He highlighted that military-to-military cooperation between the two countries is expanding, covering collaboration among the navy, army, and air force.
According to the envoy, cooperation includes training on maritime security, disaster response, operational preparedness, and capacity building. He added that the United States remains committed to assisting Bangladesh in modernising its defence capabilities and strengthening its role in peacekeeping and internal security operations.
Reaffirming Washington’s broader regional outlook, the ambassador said the United States aims to promote stability, transparency, and long-term sustainability in South Asia while respecting Bangladesh’s sovereignty and national interests.
