A tense situation developed on Monday afternoon on Dhanmondi 32 Road in the capital. Supporters of Jamaat and the NCP attempted to enter the area with two excavators to demolish the house of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The army and police quickly arrived at the scene and dispersed them.
Around noon, two excavators were seen on Mirpur Road in front of Dhanmondi 32. When the protesters tried to move them toward the house, law enforcement personnel blocked them. At one stage, the police used batons to disperse the crowd. The protesters retaliated by throwing bricks and stones, injuring one police officer.
Later, the police used sound grenades to bring the situation under control. Multiple explosions scattered the protesters. However, around 1:45 PM, they attempted to regroup in two groups. A gathering of protesters was seen forming on the 32-number section of Mirpur Road. The army and police again dispersed them.
To control the situation, more than a hundred army personnel were deployed at the scene. A large number of police officers were also present. An officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the Dhanmondi zone said they received information at noon that two excavators were heading toward Dhanmondi 32. Additional Deputy Commissioner Jisanul Haque said, “We will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands under any circumstances.”
Earlier, in February, more than half of the house on Dhanmondi 32 Road had been demolished. And after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government during the mass uprising of August 5, 2024, the house was set on fire and burned.
Today, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 announced the verdict in the case of crimes against humanity filed against Sheikh Hasina. This is the first case related to killings and other crimes against humanity committed during the mass uprising whose verdict has been broadcast live. In the highly discussed verdict, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death and life imprisonment.
