Sarwar Jamal Nizam, the BNP-nominated candidate in the Chattogram-13 (Anwara and Karnaphuli) constituency, has publicly requested extortionists to stop extortion until 12 February. He made this request on Friday night while inaugurating an election office in the Chatari area of Anwara Upazila. A 55-second video of his remarks has spread on social media. Someone present at the event recorded the video.
At the program to inaugurate the election office, which took place after 10:00 pm last night, local BNP leaders and activists, voters, and respected members of the community were present. In the video, Sarwar Jamal Nizam is heard saying that Chatari is the heart of Anwara. It is the headquarters of Anwara and an important economic area. The economic dynamism of the entire area depends on the local trade and commerce and people’s income.
Sarwar Jamal Nizam further said, “There is disorder, terrorism, and extortion going on here. I would like to make a request. To those of you who are engaged in extortion, I am saying with folded hands—please do not carry out extortion until the 12th.” He also warned that no one would be spared if there were attempts to tarnish the image of the BNP.
Attempts were made several times by phone to contact BNP candidate Sarwar Jamal Nizam and Chattogram South District BNP Convener Idris Mia to get their comments on the matter, but they could not be reached.
