Harsh Vardhan Shringla: Jamaat-e-Islami Can Only Gain Power Through Rigged Elections

Former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh and current Rajya Sabha member Harsh Vardhan Shringla has stated that Jamaat-e-Islami can only come to power through biased and violent elections.

On Friday (January 23), while speaking to reporters in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Shringla commented on the matter in response to a question.

Harsh Vardhan Shringla mentioned that Jamaat has never won in a "free and fair election" and will not be able to do so in the future. He added that in the past, Jamaat has never received more than 5 to 7 percent of the vote, and other political parties have helped them in such cases.

Shringla further stated, "Someone is bringing them (Jamaat) forward. Still, they can come to power only if there is election rigging. Otherwise, it will be impossible for them to come to power."

The former Indian Foreign Secretary also said that Bangladesh made a "big mistake" by boycotting the World Cup. He believes this decision will worsen the condition of Bangladesh's cricket and the overall sports environment in the country.

He added, "I have many friends in Bangladesh. I was their High Commissioner. They made a big mistake. Their government is not elected. It is an interim government. They did not win the election. The people did not elect them. To put it simply, they seized power. This decision taken by their government is bad for Bangladesh's overall sports sector."
