BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the current political crisis in the country was created by the “interim government and the consensus commission.”
Speaking at a discussion marking the founding anniversary of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at the National Press Club on Friday, he said,
“The ongoing crisis has been created by the current government. The commission they formed has been holding discussions for the past eight or nine months on various reform issues related to national consensus. However, we could not agree on several matters within that commission.”
The BNP secretary general added,
“There are major differences between the signed July Charter and its implementation process. By not including notes of dissent, the people of this country have been deceived.”
Fakhrul also claimed that a certain quarter was attempting to derail the national election:
“A group is working relentlessly to foil the upcoming general election. There is no scope for holding a referendum before the election.”
Although he acknowledged disagreement on some issues of the consensus commission, Fakhrul confirmed that the BNP would participate in the upcoming polls:
“We will take part in the election. The issues we could not agree upon will be reflected in our election manifesto. If the people vote for us and we get the opportunity to form the government, we will bring those matters back, pass them in parliament, and implement the necessary reforms for the country.”
He also urged those who oppose the spirit of the Liberation War and mislead the public not to oppose the election itself.
Leaders including Mahmudur Rahman Manna, president of Nagarik Oikya, and Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gono Adhikar Parishad, also spoke at the event.
