Awami League Stages Protests Across 35 Dhaka Spots Demanding Dr. Yunus’s Resignation

Leaders and activists of the Awami League, Jubo League, and affiliated organizations staged massive protest marches in Dhaka demanding the resignation of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the interim government, and his advisors.

On Tuesday morning, October 21, simultaneous demonstrations took place in at least 35 locations across the capital. According to party sources, from early morning, thousands of leaders and activists marched separately and gathered in different areas.

Leaders and activists of Dhaka South Awami League and Jubo League marched in areas including 23 Bangabandhu Avenue, Gulistan, Baitul Mukarram, National Stadium area, Joykali Temple intersection, Jatrabari, Matsya Bhaban, and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, separate marches were also held in Abdullahpur, Dhanmondi Russel Square, Kalabagan, Agargaon, Elephant Road, Kurmitola, Mirpur Kazipara, Gabtoli, Panthapath, Uttara Jasimuddin Road, and Khilkhet.

The protesters chanted slogans such as, “Resign the illegal government,” “We demand Dr. Yunus’s resignation,” “Stop repression,” and more. They alleged that the interim government had chosen a path of political vengeance by initiating cases and arrest campaigns against top leaders of the Awami League. They said, “The fall of this government is inevitable to restore democracy and establish a people’s government.”

From the protests, the leaders labeled the interim government as “illegal” and demanded the immediate resignation of Dr. Yunus and his advisors. In addition, they called for the withdrawal of all cases filed against Sheikh Hasina and other party leaders and activists, an end to repression, and assurance of freedom in political activities.

The protesters warned that if the government does not resign quickly, it will be “forced to step down through an unstoppable movement on the streets.”

Political analysts believe that these protests, ahead of the upcoming elections, have further intensified the political temperature in Dhaka. The stance of the interim government and the next strategic steps of the Awami League are now under close watch by political observers.
