BNP leaders and activists have set fire to tires and blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway demanding the reinstatement of the Gazipur-6 constituency. As a result, traffic on this busy road has come to a halt, creating a traffic jam stretching about 12 kilometers.
The protest began around 10 a.m. on Wednesday (November 12) in the Tongi College Gate area.
It has been learned that there was a proposal to add six new constituencies in Gazipur this time. The leaders and activists of this constituency were awaiting the High Court’s verdict on the matter. However, two days ago, the High Court ruled to cancel the six constituencies. Immediately after the hearing, the BNP filed an appeal to reinstate the constituency.
Following this, on Wednesday morning, under the leadership of BNP, the party’s activists blocked the highway, staged a protest, and set tires on fire to demand the reinstatement of the constituency.
Gazipur Metropolitan’s Additional Police Commissioner and Acting Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan said, “BNP’s protest is underway in Tongi by blocking the road and setting tires on fire. As a result, vehicular movement has come to a stop. Law enforcement personnel have been deployed at the scene to bring the situation under control.”
