Leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations held a torch procession in the Ganobhaban area of Dhaka.
Police said that the torch procession took place around 10 p.m. on Thursday in front of Ganobhaban on Aurangzeb Road.
Earlier in the evening, Chief Election Commissioner A. M. M. Nasir Uddin announced the schedule for the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum.
According to the schedule, the parliamentary election will be held on Thursday, February 12, and the referendum on the implementation of the July charter will be held in July.
A few hours after the schedule was announced, news came of the Awami League’s torch procession.
A witness named Abu Sayem said, “A little after 10 p.m., a group of people came out with torches lit.
“They were chanting various slogans including ‘Joy Bangla Joy Bangabandhu,’ ‘We reject the illegal government’s schedule,’ and ‘Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile.’”
He also said that a few people on several motorcycles were leading and following the procession.
It has also been reported that in more than 90 upazilas across the country, leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations have held torch processions.
