Today is the 87th birth anniversary of Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni

Today, Thursday (4 December), is the 87th birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, the nephew of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the founder of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League. He was born on this day in 1939 in the historic Sheikh family of Tungipara in Gopalganj. His father, the late Sheikh Nurul Haque, was Bangabandhu’s brother-in-law. His mother, Sheikh Asiya Begum, was Bangabandhu’s elder sister.

 

Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was one of the organizers of the Great Liberation War and the chief of the Mujib Bahini. In 1975, on August 15, he and his wife Begum Arzu Moni were brutally killed along with Bangabandhu. In his personal life, he was the father of two sons.

 

Under the direction of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Moni established the Jubo League in 1972 as the first youth organization in independent Bangladesh, formed with valiant freedom fighters. He passed his secondary education from Dhaka Nabakumar Institute and completed his higher secondary from Jagannath College in 1958. In 1960, he obtained his BA degree from BM College in Barishal.

 

Alongside politics, Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was involved in literature and journalism. He was the author of the novel Obanchhita and served as the editor of the daily Banglar Bani, Bangladesh Times, and Cinema.
