The founding anniversary of Bangladesh Chhatra League is observed every year on January 4, as the organization was founded on January 4, 1948, by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It is the student wing of the Awami League and has played an important role in various movements and struggles in Bangladesh. Recently, its 78th founding anniversary was observed, highlighting the organization’s long and eventful history.
On the occasion of its 78th founding anniversary, Bangladesh Chhatra League has announced month-long programs. Under the title “Anniversary of Resurgence, Call of Resistance,” the organization has called for strengthening the struggle to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War, democracy, education, and fundamental rights. In a press release issued by the Central Executive Committee, it was stated that January 4 is not only a memorable day in the history of student politics in Bangladesh, but also a symbol of resistance, mass movements, and the struggle for independence. The statement highlighted the historical role of Bangladesh Chhatra League, from the Language Movement to mass uprisings, the Liberation War, the anti-autocracy movement, and recent struggles to establish democratic rights.
The press release alleged that at present an undemocratic, repressive, and fascist system is using state machinery to suppress dissenting opinions. In this situation, Chhatra League said it seeks to once again build organized resistance by taking responsibility from history. The organization claimed that people’s voting rights, education, and freedom of expression have been curtailed, and that the education system is being deliberately pushed toward destruction.
The announced programs include—
On January 4, dissemination of anniversary greetings and video messages through online platforms.
On January 4, a virtual discussion meeting of the Central Committee, where Awami League President Sheikh Hasina is set to join as the chief guest.
On January 4, on the day of the anniversary, flag hoisting at central and district offices, paying tribute at the portrait of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and holding discussion meetings.
From January 5 to 12, a series of programs on various social and political issues have been announced, including solidarity programs against repression, protests demanding the restoration of education rights, events in remembrance of martyrs, rallies and campaigns against violence against women, demonstrations against communalism and extremism, and human chains protesting textbook shortages and mismanagement in the education system.
It was also stated that a special discussion meeting will be organized on January 10 on the occasion of the historic Homecoming Day of the Father of the Nation. In addition, the press release mentioned that online content competitions will be organized from January 8 to 15.
Bangladesh Chhatra League said that through these programs, efforts to restore democracy, the struggle against fascism, and the movement to realize students’ rightful demands will be further intensified.
