JMBF Urges EU Delegation to Address Human Rights Crisis in Bangladesh
JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), an independent human rights organization, has issued an urgent appeal to the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights ahead of its three-day visit to Bangladesh (16–18 September 2025). The organization warned of what it describes as an “extremely serious deterioration” of the country’s law and order, human rights, and democratic space under the interim government led by Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
NHRC Remains Leaderless, Inactive as Citizens Suffer
Bangladesh’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been without leadership for more than ten months, leaving the institution paralysed at a time when allegations of rights abuses are rising across the country. Despite repeated promises of reform, no progress has been made in reconstituting the commission, sparking frustration among citizens and concern from rights defenders and international partners.
Over 2 Million Jobs Lost Since Yunus-Led Interim Government Took Office
Bangladesh has witnessed massive job losses since the Yunus-led interim government assumed power, with over 2.1 million people reportedly losing employment during the first half of the 2024-25 fiscal year (July–December), according to a new survey by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). Women have been disproportionately affected, making up 1.8 million, or nearly 85 percent, of the newly unemployed.
