AI Could Eliminate 100 Million U.S. Jobs Within a Decade, Warns Bernie Sanders Report

Artificial intelligence and automation could displace up to 100 million jobs across the United States within the next ten years, according to a new report released Monday by Senator Bernie Sanders.

The findings indicate that the impact will be far-reaching, affecting a wide range of professions—both white-collar and blue-collar roles.

Sanders, the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, emphasized that the effects of automation could be dramatic: up to 40% of registered nurses, 47% of truck drivers, 64% of accountants, 65% of teaching assistants, and a staggering 89% of fast food workers could see their roles replaced by machines.

“The agricultural revolution unfolded over thousands of years. The industrial revolution took more than a century,” the report states. “Artificial labor could reshape the economy in less than a decade.”

This stark warning stands in contrast to the position of the Trump administration, which has consistently pushed for U.S. leadership in AI innovation, citing national security concerns over losing technological dominance to China.

In an accompanying opinion piece for Fox News, Sanders raised concerns over the motivations behind the surge in AI investment. He pointed to tech billionaires like Elon Musk, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos—individuals who are collectively pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into the development of these technologies.

Sanders cautioned that the AI and robotics systems these billionaires are funding could enable corporate America to eliminate tens of millions of good-paying jobs, slash labor costs, and boost corporate profits.

He criticized the use of emerging technology as a tool for profit maximization and wealth concentration, highlighting how many corporate leaders have simultaneously announced large-scale investments in automation alongside layoffs and aggressive cost-cutting measures.

Workers in industries such as manufacturing, trucking, and taxi services are likely to be hit hardest by the rapid growth of self-driving technology being developed by car manufacturers and tech firms, the report warns.

Sanders also expressed doubt that these developments are intended to improve the lives of everyday Americans. “Sixty percent of our people live paycheck-to-paycheck,” he said, arguing that the real motivation behind these investments is to “exponentially increase their wealth and power.”

The transition has already begun, the report notes, as major corporations like Amazon and Walmart have already eliminated tens of thousands of jobs in their ongoing push toward automation.
