Khagrachari Tensions Persist as Section 144 Remains Despite Partial Blockade Lift
Khagrachari remains under an indefinite ban on public gatherings as tensions simmer over the alleged rape of a teenage Marma girl. While the protest-led blockade of key highways connecting Dhaka and Chattogram has been temporarily eased, unrest and mobility restrictions persist throughout the district. The protesting group, Jumma Chhatra-Janata, announced the partial relaxation on Monday to allow medical aid and funeral arrangements for victims of recent violence in Guimara.
UPDF Accused by ISPR of Fueling Unrest in Khagrachari
At least three people from the national minority community were killed and dozens injured, including members of the security forces, in violent clashes in Guimara upazila of Khagrachari. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Sunday night, the unrest was allegedly instigated by the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and its affiliated groups, who reportedly carried out coordinated attacks and acts of arson targeting homes and shops in the area.
