President Pays Tribute at the National Martyrs’ Memorial on the Great Victory Day
Those whose blood brought an end to two decades of Pakistani rule and gave rise to an independent Bangladesh on the world map—the nation is remembering with deep reverence the heroic sons on the 54th anniversary of the Bengalis’ victory in the Liberation War.
Architects of the 1971 Victory to Spend a Second Victory Day in Prison
Several freedom fighters and organizers of the Liberation War who received recognition for their heroic roles in the great Liberation War of 1971 will spend Victory Day in prison for the second time this year. Many former ministers, members of parliament, and political leaders who served during the ousted Awami League government are currently incarcerated in political cases filed over the July–August movement of 2024.
A Name Secures Its Place on the World Map — “Bangladesh”
Today, December 16, is the Great Victory Day—the milestone day when the name “Bangladesh” was established on the world map as an independent territory. On this day, after nine consecutive months of the Liberation War that began in March 1971, the Pakistani occupying forces surrendered at the Racecourse Ground in Dhaka (present-day Suhrawardy Udyan). The name “Bangladesh” was inscribed on the world stage.
Why did the interim government cancel the Victory Day parade for two consecutive years?
From the first week of December, preparations for Victory Day celebrations begin in Bangladesh. Almost every year, as part of these celebrations marking the country’s Victory Day on December 16, a parade ceremony is held at the National Parade Ground.
