Liberation Forces Tighten Grip, Pakistan Seeks Surrender Terms
In Dhaka, General Niazi and Rao Farman Ali were disoriented. Pakistan’s defeat in the war was inevitable. Now it was their turn to defend themselves. Pakistan’s defeat was only a matter of time. Civil administration had been established in the liberated areas of Bangladesh. The flag of independent Bengal was flying in the sky.
December 7, 1971: Another Soviet Veto in the UN Security Council
On this day, Acting President of the Provisional Government of Bangladesh Syed Nazrul Islam said in a radio address, “It will not take much longer for Dhaka to be freed from the invaders. Very soon Dhaka will fall under the control of the freedom fighters. Bangladesh is now as true as daylight. Our beloved leader Bangabandhu will also return to the soil of Bengal very soon.”
December 6: India Grants Diplomatic Recognition to Bangladesh
Amid thunderous applause and jubilant celebrations in the Lok Sabha, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi announced today that India has formally recognised the government of Bangladesh.
Dhaka’s Skies Under Allied Air Control
Inside the country, the Bangladesh–India allied forces were advancing at an unstoppable pace. Everywhere, the freedom fighters were achieving victory. The skies over Dhaka were completely taken over by the allied air force. Almost all of Pakistan’s fighter aircraft had been destroyed.
